Van Gogh’s unique, thick brushstrokes and the unclear dark object in the foreground together give the work the atmosphere of mystery. Van Gogh's use of white and yellow pays attention to the sky. The bright stars in it reach out for the viewer. The night sky and the sleeping town are left in the distance, attracting the viewer. It seems that the author tries to contrast the life and death with saturated stars and a quiet village. Probably Van Gogh shows that even in the darkness it is still possible to see the bright light in the windows of the houses, and with shining stars all over the sky, there is always light for you to follow.

Van Gogh painted the work while in an asylum in Saint-Rémy – a small village in the Southern France. The painting depicts the view from his sanatorium window.
